A wheelchairs lift, also known as a platform lift, is a powered device designed to raise a wheelchairs and its occupant in order to overcome a step or similar vertical barrier. There are two main categories of wheelchairs lifts: Wheelchairs lifts for vehicles, such as cars, vans or buses, these are discussed first.
Wheelchairs lifts for houses and other buildings. These are discussed further below, to jump there now click on Home Wheelchairs Lifts.

Advantages of inside wheelchairs lifts
  • When the wheelchairs comes inside, it is protected from weather
  • This type of wheelchairs lift does not cause the vehicle to be longer, so it does not change how the vehicle drives.
  • Some more expensive inside wheelchairs lifts are built so that the wheelchair user can stay in the wheelchairs during the transfer
Disadvantages of inside wheelchairs lifts
  • Most of these wheelchairs lifts will take up space inside the vehicle or in its trunk, either from the wheelchairs lift, the wheelchair or both.
  • They often require expensive installation or modifications of the vehicle, such as removal of seats.
  • Some vehicle modifications may change vehicle guarantees.
Advantages of outside wheelchairs lifts
  • Little modification of vehicle required.
  • Installation is usually easy and inexpensive.
  • Does not take up space inside of the vehicle.
Disadvantages of outside wheelchairs lifts
  • Wheelchairs is out in the weather and can be damaged by rain, wind or road debris
  • The wheelchairs lift sticks out in back, making the vehicle longer and requiring caution when driving.
  • The longer a vehicle is the more likely it will ‘bottom out’ on driveways or bumps. Many people report problems with this.
  • A longer vehicle requires extra space when parking and can make parallel parking more difficult.

Extreme wheelchair sports

Extreme wheelchair sport is an umbrella term encompassing several sports redesigned to be actively performed by athletes in wheelchairs. These sports cover the wide spectrum of sports for wheelchair bound people from likes of wheelchair basketball to wheelchair tennis and wheelchair racing to wheelchair golf. Whatever sports the human mind can conceive an individual in a wheelchair can achieve.

These sports play a vital role in the rehabilitation of those with disabilities and can often be a catalyst for increased confidence and self esteem. More and more wheelchair users are playing sports every day - some even on a professional level.

There are a wide range of sports that have been adapted to be played by people with varying types of disability, as well as several that are unique to disabled sports. Within each movement, different sports are practiced at different levels; for example, not all sports in the Paralympic movement are part of the Paralympic Games. In addition, many sports are practiced by persons with a disability outside the formal sports movements.

There are several wheelchair sports associations and gaming opportunities. Wheelchair Sports Organization was founded in 1956 as National Wheelchair Athletic Association. In 1994, the name was changed to Wheelchair Sports, USA to more accurately reflect the organization's mission. The national offices moved to Colorado Springs, CO in 1982 to be closer to other sports committees recognized by the US Olympic Committee.
