Binaural Hearing Aids...Do I really NEED TWO ?

Basically, if you have two ears with hearing loss, and if both ears could benefit from hearing aids, you need dual hearing aids or binaural hearing aids. If you try to amplify sound in only one ear, you cannot expect to do very well. There are many advantages associated with binaural (two ear) listening and importantly, there are problems associated with wearing only one hearing aid.

You can hear better in background noise with two hearing aids versus one hearing aid. Two hearing aids enable you to tell which drection sounds are coming from.Localization (knowing where the sound came from) is only possible with two ears and it is just about impossible with one ear.  Localization is not just a sound quality issue; it may also be a safety issue.

Receiver-In-Canal (RIC)

Receiver-in-canal (RIC)model of hearing aids which is an innovation, specially designed for minimal to sever hearing loss. These hearing aids are available in digital technology and partially invisible. The receiver of the RIC (the loudspeaker) is placed in the ear-tip, thereby reducing its size.

The receiver-in-canal (RIC) model is a newer development in hearing aids and is suitable for mild to severe hearing loss. The RIC model consists of three parts: The housing, which sits behind the ear, and a thin earwire connecting the housing to the receiver. The receiver goes directly into the ear canal.
The RIC model is a very discreet, yet powerful hearing aid, which works fully automatically.

Type of hearing aids

Due to technology, hearing aids are now made more durable and comfortable. Manufacturers have made them smaller and easier to use and they are able to provide a better sound quality. Moreover, hearing-aid technology has made major strides in recent years, most notably with the development of very small open-fit digital hearing aids. In loud social settings, the most challenging environment for hearing-aid users, survey participants reported more improvement with those aids, which don't plug up the ear canal, over other styles that use earmolds, custom-shaped inserts that fit tightly in the ear canal.

Hearing Aid Types
  • Body Aids
  • Behind-the-ear (BTE)
  • In-the-ear(ITE)
  • In-the-canal(ITC)
  • Completely-in-canal(CIC)
  • CROS and biCROS
Recent hearing aids include wireless hearing aids. One hearing aid can transmit to the other side so that pressing one aid's program button simultaneously changes the other aid and both aids change background settings simultaneously. FM listening systems are now emerging with wireless receivers integrated with the use of hearing aids.
