Receiver-In-Canal (RIC)

Receiver-in-canal (RIC)model of hearing aids which is an innovation, specially designed for minimal to sever hearing loss. These hearing aids are available in digital technology and partially invisible. The receiver of the RIC (the loudspeaker) is placed in the ear-tip, thereby reducing its size.

BTE vs ITE Hearing Aids



A Behind-the-ear, hearing aid, being larger in size, allows for more gain(power) than a Custom made Hearing Aids. Physical size,room considerations, dictate what electronic components can be installed inside either the custom made shell, or the case of the BTE hearing aid. The Behind-the-ear hearing aid usually uses a size 675 battery (blue tab) because it provides longer battery life than any other size. Usually People that need the power of a BTE need a battery that provides the longer battery life, otherwise they would be changing batteries every other day. The more severe the hearing loss, the bigger the hearing aid, the bigger the battery drain, the bigger the battery used in the manufacture of the hearing aid.The biggest potential for hearing aid users are those that suffer from what is called a "High Frequency" hearing loss. Those People have normal hearing in the low frequencies, but have a loss in what is considered the high frequencies in audiology.

These devices fit in the outer ear bowl (called the concha); they are sometimes visible when standing face to face with someone. ITE hearing aids are custom made to fit each individual's ear. They can be used in mild to some severe hearing losses. Feedback, a squealing/whistling caused by sound leaking and being amplified again, may be a problem for severe hearing losses.[citation needed] Some modern circuits and Disability Products are able to provide feedback regulation or cancellation to assist with this. Another way to deal with feedback is venting. The vent is a tube primarily placed to offer pressure equalization. However, different vent styles and sizes can be used to influence and prevent feedback . ITEs have not been recommended for young children because their fit could not be as easily modified as the earmold for a BTE, and thus the aid had to be replaced frequently as the child grew.[citation needed] However, there are new ITEs made from a silicone type material that mitigates the need for costly replacements.

BTE Hearing Aids Glasses


BTE hearing aids are simply a style of Hearing Aids that sits behind the ear. Other styles include in-the-ear hearing aids and in-the-canal hearing aids. BTE hearing aids are optimal for children because they tend to sit more securely than other styles and because they can offer better sound amplification. However, for those that wear glasses, they can be a bit tricky to wear simultaneously.

1)When wearing hearing aids, you simply slide your sunglasses on like normal. Your sunglass temples should be against your head and your hearing aids---if behind-the-ear style---against the sunglass temples. If you're wearing in-the-ear canal hearing aids, just put your sunglasses on normally.

2)Take your sunglasses with when you go to try, buy or get hearing aids. When you're getting a new pair of hearing aids, make sure to tell the hearing health care provider that you regularly wear sunglasses. Show the hearing health care provider your sunglasses, put the sunglasses on so the specialist can see if the glasses change the anatomy of your ear and how much space your sunglasses need to fit comfortable behind your ears.

Hearing Test

A hearing test provides an evaluation of the sensitivity of a person's sense of Hearing Aids and is most often performed by an audiologist using an audiometer. An audiometer is used to determine a person's hearing sensitivity at different frequencies.


Two different types of hearing screening tests are used to screen hearing in babies


Otoacoustic Emissions-One of the tests is called otoacoustic emissions or OAEs. For this test, a miniature earphone and microphone are placed in the ear, sounds are played and a response is measured. If a baby hears normally, an echo is reflected back into the ear canal and is measured by the microphone. When a baby has a hearing loss, no echo can be measured on the OAE test.


Auditory Brainstem Response-The second test is called the auditory brainstem response or ABR. For this test, sounds are played to the baby's ears. Band-aid like electrodes are placed on the baby's head to detect responses. This test measures how the hearing nerve responds to sounds and can identify babies who have a hearing loss

Types Of hearing aids

1)Behind the ear-Behind-the-ear aids have a plastic housing for the components which rests behind the ear. A clear plastic tube funnels amplified sound into an earmold in the ear canal. Hearing aids model, though developed decades ago, can be every bit as sophisticated as smaller hearing aids. In fact, it can hold more circuitry and amplify sounds to a greater degree than in-the-ear types. BTE aids can be more durable than other types and a few are even waterproof.


2)In the ear-In-the-ear  aids house components in a custom-formed earmold that fits within the outer portion of the ear. Its size and easy-to-use controls also may be helpful for those with limited manual dexterity.




3)Disposable hearing aids-Disposable hearing aids are hearing aids that have a non-replaceable battery. These aids are designed to use power sparingly, so that the battery lasts longer than batteries used in traditional hearing aids. Disposable hearing aids are meant to remove the task of battery replacement and other maintenance chores (adjustment or cleanings). To date, two companies have brought disposable hearing aids to market: Songbird Hearing and Lyric.[citation needed] Both are digital, but are used in very different ways by the consumer. Songbird is a BTE hearing aid that is bought online and worn like any other BTE device. When it runs out, the user replaces it with a new one. Lyric is implanted deep in the ear canal by a professional. When it runs out, it must be removed and replaced with a new one by a professional.

Hearing aids Processing


Analog audio/Adjustable control: The audio circuit is analog with electronic components that can be adjusted. The hearing professional determines the gain and other specifications required for the wearer, and then adjusts the analog components either with small controls on the hearing aid itself or by having a laboratory build the hearing aid to meet those specifications. After the adjustment the resulting the audio does not change any further, other than overall loudness that the wearer adjusts with a volume control. This type of circuitry is generally the least flexible. The first practical electronic hearing aid with adjustable analog audio circuitry was based on US Patent 2,017,358, "Hearing Aid Apparatus and Amplifier" by Samual Gordon Taylor, filed in 1932.

·      Analog audio/Programmable control: The audio circuit is analog but with additional electronic control circuitry that can be programmed, sometimes with more than one program. The electronic control circuitry can be fixed during manufacturing or in some cases, the hearing professional can use an external computer temporarily connected to the hearing aid to program the additional control circuitry. The wearer can change the program for different listening environments by pressing buttons either on the device itself or on a remote control or in some cases the additional control circuitry operates automatically. This type of circuitry is generally more flexible than simple adjustable controls. The first hearing aid with analog audio circuitry and automatic digital electronic control circuitry was based on US Patent 4,025,721, "Method of and means for adaptively filtering near-stationary noise from speech" by D Graupe, GD Causey, filed in 1975. This digital electronic control circuitry was used to identify and automatically reduce noise in individual frequency channels of the analog audio circuits and was known as the Zeta Noise Blocker.

With the addition of speech recognition and internet capability in the mobile phone, the wearer has optimal communication ability in many more situations than with hearing aids alone. This growing list includes voice activated dialing, voice activated software applications either on the phone or on the internet, receipt of audio signals from databases on the phone or on internet, or audio signals from television sets or from global positioning systems. The first practical, wearable, fully digital hearing aid was invented by Maynard Engebretson, Robert E Morley, Jr. and Gerald R Popelka.Their work resulted in US Patent 4,548,082, "Hearing aids, signal supplying apparatus, systems for compensating hearing deficiencies, and methods" by A Maynard Engebretson, Robert E Morley, Jr. and Gerald R Popelka, filed in 1984. This patent formed the basis of all subsequent fully digital Hearing aids from all manufacturers, including those produced currently.
