wheelchairs user guide

Guide is for users of the wheelchairs. It provides advice on safe use of your motorised wheelchair and other electric mobility devices for people with physical diasabilities As a wheelchair user you will find that more and more public transport is becoming accessible to you. New regulations mean that in future trains, buses and taxis will all have to be designed so that most wheelchair users can travel on them.

Wheelchairs legrests allow the wheelchair user to lift their legs and position them. Footrests are normally height adjustable to provide proper leg support.Leg rests can be bought as 'swing away' and detachable, either letting the user move them out of the way when getting in or out of the wheelchair or removing them completely.

wheelchairs owner's hands are exposed to constant friction and heat generated by pushing, stopping, turning and wheelchair transfers. They are numbed and desensitised in cold and wet weather. Active and athletic wheelchair owners are particularly vulnerable to overuse injuries caused by constant use and exposure. In fact, at least 18% of all wheelchair users experience blisters, abrasions, and lacerations. Many more develop thick, rough calluses.

Before you Travel

    * The majority of wheelchair users will be able to travel on public transport. But, you may find that you can't if:
*your chair is very big (taking up a space - when you are in it - of more than 700 mm wide or 1200 mm long), or
#your chair is very heavy, or
#you need to travel with your legs fully extended or the backrest reclined, or
#you have a scooter (which will be difficult to manoeuvre and may be unstable in a vehicle).

   * The transport operator has the right to refuse to let you travel if he believes that your wheelchair is not in a safe condition.
    * There will continue to be a need for door to door transport services for those who cannot be public    transport users.

Transit wheelchair

wheelchairs
Transit wheelchair is used by those users who can not use a standard wheelchair. The transit wheelchair is equipped with small rear wheels and are generally built to be folded to save space. A folding chair is beneficial when space is a problem, storing or transporting them is not a problem due to their compact size when folded.

Wheelchairs has an array of features to make it one of the most practical, comfortable and reliable occasional use wheelchairs available. The attendant handbrake is an extremely useful feature in conjuction with the main lockable brakes near the rear wheels.

A transit chair has smaller rear wheels which make them lighter and more compact than their counterparts. Transit wheelchairs are a great option for customers who want to move somebody else using the rear push handles. Some manufacturers have countered this as best as possibly by making the rear wheel larger than normal- but not so large that it addstoo much weight. Rear wheels of a transit wheelchair can vary between 8 and 16 inches in diameter . These chairs are slightly less expensive for their weight which makes them a good option when a lightweight chair is required, the occupant doesn't deem self-propelling a necessity and funds are limited.
Features-:
# lightweight durable aluminium frame
# fixed padded desk arms - fits easily up to a table or desk!
# Safety seat belt included
# easy adjustable swingaway, removeable leg rests complete with heel support straps
# padded black nylon upholstery
# folding back rest to save space when storing or loading in a vehicle
# attendant locking safety brakes for security located on push handles
# rear wheel brakes for added safety

Portable wheelchair ramps

Portable wheelchair ramps are designed to live up to their name. They are easy to transport anywhere because of their lightweight material. They can be easily folded in single or multi layers, or even rolled up. You can access many places which are restrictive due to curbs, stair steps, and doorsteps.People with disabilities find it hard to cope with the fact that they have to forego their freedom to move around. While wheelchairs solve this problem to a great extent, the lack of access in public places aggravates the disability.

Wheelchairs are used by people for whom walking is difficult or impossible due to illness, injury, or disability. Wheelchairs can have extra cushions and other parts added to improve support if the wheelchair user cannot keep their body in a good sitting position, or to make the wheelchair more comfortable to sit in.Portable wheelchair ramps are available in a wide range of designs, materials, and configurations.Accordingly, the needs of wheelchairs users and caregivers should therefore be accommodated.  If the needs of everyone involved are clearly identified and the ramps are selected with the appropriate combination of features, then both wheelchair user and caregiver will be properly equipped.
Benefits and features of portable wheelchair ramps provide easy setup, handling process, transition, and after-use storage. Unlike their foldable counterparts,They are very compact and lightweight, making them highly portable. Use this option if you need accessibility support for limited steps or low inclination.

Terrain wheelchairs

Terrain wheelchairs travel where standard conventional wheelchairs will bog down, including over gravel, grass, in water and through sand and ice! They are available in electric power and manual models. People with strong upper body strength often prefer manual all terrain or sports models specially designed to suit their favorite outdoors lifestyle.

Wheelchairs have come a long way. No longer are they simply a useful device for those with limited or no mobility to get from one place to another. Wheelchair improvements are being made each day from new designs in sport wheelchairs to amazing all terrain wheelchairs. Any improvement, no matter how small, which increases the safety of a person in a wheelchair, is a great improvement.Terrain wheelchairs available as both manual and power chairs though they are typically miles apart in cost. Manual all terrain wheelchairs are relatively cheap while electric power wheelchairs are very expensive. I think my next upgrade will be to an all terrain powerchair as I love the beach.

The problem with many 4×4 powerchairs is size. They are difficult to navigate a standard house in – forget hallway u-turn’s - the wide tyres stick and mark tiled floors and they screw up carpet and mats.
